As the new owners of Amneris, we were keen to take her out on her maiden voyage in our hands. Our friends Jonathan and Josh came along, to help us learn the ropes and guide us around the rivers Penryn and Fal.
October 9 2018
Even though it’s October, the sun is shining and its 20 degrees C. Before we leave, Jonathan and Josh help us rig the headsail (thankfully with a roller furler), and then we’re away down the Penryn river, weaving our way through the moorings of Falmouth Haven marina, and turning to port to explore the Carrick Roads on the Fal.
We learn about the local hazards, such as Turnaware bar and the King Harry ferry, and enjoy a beautiful afternoon sailing all the way up to Malpas. It’s spring tide but we’re not experienced enough sailors to continue up to Truro. And, even though Jonathan and Josh are extremely competent sailors, we’re not quite ready for that kind of adventure yet.
Instead, we motorsail back down to Falmouth harbour, then switch off the engine and do our first mooring under sail at our weekend berth in Falmouth Permier marina.
