Stay at Home and Go Sailing with the RYA and Virtual Regatta!

Sailors, amateur and professional, are likely to be fond of open spaces and freedom. Like so many millions of others around the world, most of those who would normally be on a boat at this time of year are taking their responsibilities seriously and staying indoors to help prevent the spread of coronavirus. But that doesn’t mean you can’t get out on the water virtually…

The RYA is urging sailors – both old hands and newcomers – to test their existing skills and learn new ones via the free Virtual Regatta game. It works on laptop, desktop, mobile phone and tablet, and is available from the Virtual Regatta website.

It doesn’t cost anything to play Virtual Regatta, though you will need to create a user account if you want access to certain features such as competing, saving your score, and taking part in the eSailing World & GBR National Championships. There are also options for sailing clubs, to help them keep members engaged with the sport through the coronavirus lockdown period.

Although Virtual Regatta is not run by the RYA, the British sailing organisation is partnering with the game’s developers. On its website, the RYA says: “In partnership with World Sailing and Virtual Regatta, the RYA is pleased to announce that Virtual Regatta have kindly offered a free 12 month VIP pass for RYA Affiliated clubs”.

The organisation adds: “Now is the perfect time to start eSailing, especially with the temporary closure of so many clubs and centres and everyone having to stay at home. It’s a fantastic way to stay in touch and continue racing and practice your racing tactics from your own home”.
